Yukon Politics Strike 2

Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) minister Ranj Pillai, sided with the Dawson City chapter of the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB), against placer miner Darrell Carey, rejecting Carey’s proposal (Star, Dec. 15, 16).

Someone on staff at EMR failed to inform Minister Pallai that the YESAB’s findings were based on negative impacts only. Apparently, the local YESAB director decided to exclude all the socio-economic benefits of the mine and the mitigations offered by the Slinky Mine operator. That was: “Strike 1”, against Premier Sandy Silver’s Liberal government.  Minister Pillai is still swinging away, and the team hasn’t even settled into the dugout.

Strike 2: EMR is bringing charges against Yukon Gold star Ken Foy (Star, Dec. 15). No one at EMR has said where or when the alleged offenses took place. Foy appears in court on Jan.18th. In the past EMR has been very reluctant to charge any miners with violations, but most especially huge violators, like Clifford Frame, remember him? Frame, stuck Canadian taxpayers with five hundred years of cleanup costs at the Faro Mine.

I can’t remember if Frame of Westrey Coal Mine disaster infamy, was a Conservative crony or a NDP crony. Wasn’t it both? Doesn’t matter now, all that matters is that, good old boy Frame is still rich. Frame never had to pay compensation costs, and never had to say he was sorry.

Before minister Pillai, EMR, YESAB and First Nations do more damage to Premier Sandy Silver’s constituents, or the Yukon, the minister could make some inquiries:

  1. Does Premier Sandy Silver, live in the Dome road subdivision?
  2. Is the premier a member of the Dawson City Cross Country Ski Club?
  3. Is the premier out to destroy placer gold miners in Yukon?
  4. Is the premier secretly in favor of oil and gas development through fracking?
  5. Is the premier going to stop his EMR minister from choking on this portfolio?

So, chew it up or spit it out!

Old prospectors know: if you can’t run with the big dogs, sit on the porch with the pups. Merry Christmas, Joyous Noel to all, and happy New Year.
